What’s the weather like in Ericeira?
Nothing is as unpredictable as the weather in Ericeira. That is the easiest way to describe the weather when someone asks you ‘What’s the weather like in Ericeira?’. There is never a straight answer, because some days the weather can change with the blink of an eye. However, there are some general rules to follow when making a decision on when to visit this beautiful surf town on the Atlantic. In a nutshell: spring is sunny with some rainy days, summer is never too hot with some foggy mornings, in autumn the weather is mostly calm and waves are clean, winter has huge swells and can be stormy but also sunny. Make sure to rent a car if you want to be flexible on the cloudy or rainy days.
THE WEATHER IN ERICEIRA
Keeping in mind that Ericeira is right on the Atlantic ocean, and that the temperature of the water almost never reaches 20 degrees, you can imagine it has it’s impact on the weather in Ericeira. Nights always cool down, so make sure you always bring a warm sweater when you go out to diner. In general, this is what you can expect each season in Ericeira:
APRIL, MAY AND JUNE
Temperatures start to rise around the end of March, beginning of April. There is a Portuguese saying ‘Abril, águas mil’, which tells you that it can rain – a lot- in April. However: no rain, no flowers. So the rain also makes sure nature will be at it’s best in spring. Flowers in bloom, and fresh green hills wherever you are in Portugal. May warms up a bit more, and towards June the chances of rain are smaller and smaller and the amount of sunlight and daylight grow steadily. One of the nicest times to visit Ericeira.
JULY AND AUGUST
July and August are the real high season. Lots of sunshine, lots of daylight hours, lots of north/west winds and lots of foggy mornings. Don’t let foggy mornings put you in a bad mood, 9 out of 10 times the sun will come out around noon. And if it doesn’t, you just drive to Lisbon or Cascais and temperatures can be up to 10 degrees higher. There will be lots of beach days, but there is almost always a breeze that will cool you down.
SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER
If you want to make sure you will surf nice, clean waves: these are the months to travel to Ericeira. usually the north winds will disappear in the beginning of September. Around mid September temperatures start to drop and you will notice days are already becoming shorter. These months are in general good for surf, and weather can still be warm and sunny. Sunset can be really spectacular.
DECEMBER, JANUARY, FEBRUARY AND MARCH
Winter in Ericeira can be great. If you are lucky it is sunny, clear skies and clean waves. If you are unlucky it storms, waves are gigantic, it’s cold and rains. Winter is always humid, and days are short. The upside is that you will have the beach to yourself, and maybe also the waves, since it is really low season.
